IAAF Diamond League: Okagbare Disappoints In Rabat, Finishes 7th In 200m


Sprinter Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor failed to bounce back from her disappointing runs in the IAAF Diamond League meetings, running a rather mediocre 23.42 seconds in the 200m event to finish in seventh position at the ninth leg of the meeting Friday in Rabat, Morocco .

The former Commonwealth Games double sprints queen was expected to race back into reckoning in Rabat from a series of unispiring runs immediately after opening her Diamond League season with an impressive 10.90 seconds in the 100m in Doha, Qatar last May .


Okagbare-Ighoteguonor holds the fastest time in the event so far this year following her 22.04 seconds Nigeria record setting run in Abilene, Texas, USA last March. She however failed to fulfil expectations in a race won by Bahama’s Shaunae Miller-Uibo who ran 22.29 seconds into a -0.5 m/s head wind .

Fast rising Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith came second (22.40 seconds) while 2015 NCAA champions Prandini Jenna came third (22.60 seconds).The other African in the race, Muriel Ahoure of Cote D’Ivoire came in fifth in 22.70 seconds .


In the 100m hurdles, reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Tobilola Amusan ran 12.87 seconds to place fifth.The race the USA made a clean sweep of the medals with McNeal Brianna coming first in 12.51 seconds with Nelvis Sharika (12.58 seconds) and Christian Manning (12.72 seconds) placing second and third respectively.

The IAAF Diamond League train will make it’s 10th stop at the Herculis Zepter in Monaco next week.
