After Killing Chiejina, Derico reigned in supreme and became the grand master of terror in the Eastern part of Nigeria. The whole of Anambra state and its environs lived in fear as people were no longer safe and Umuleri was the hideout of the notorious daredevil. He also had hideouts in Agbor, Asaba and Benin city. From his hideouts, Derico sends messages to the security forces in the state vowing that they will pay with their lives for killing members of his gang. The traders in Onitsha market couldn' t go about their daily activities peacefully while those living in Onitsha lost sleeps. So many commercial banks folded up in Onitsha due to Derico' s routine robbery and carting away with millions of naira. Travellers who passed through that route were always in fear of anticipated attack by the hoodlum and his gang. The worries on how to handle and bring the activities of the hoodlum to an end gave the then governor of Anambra State, Chinwoke Mbadinuju sleepless nights. Derico was terror personified as he raided Nnewi, Nkpor, Onitsha, Asaba and from the towns in Ihiala down to the remote villages in Umuleri. The mere whisper of his name made people tremble. He forcefully took over people' s Wives, lands and businesses. Members of his family got away with people' s goods and never paid for anything they purchased because they were related to Derico. Derico was declared invincible, invisible and some said he was a spirit as he could not be arrested. Derico reportedly killed 25 police men and wasted the lives of more than 2, 000 people. He spearheaded so many bus robberies and killed so many passengers without remorse. Derico believed so much in the charms prepared for him by native doctors and juju priests as he usually boasted that he was invincible. The then Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo was infuriated over the activities of the 22 years old criminal who unleashed terror in the country without being apprehended. Governor Mbadinuju became frustrated as so many plans to capture the criminal failed. The police lost so many men to the Derico and became frustrated on what to do in order to capture the bandit and bring him to book. The Anambra state police command on May 2001 flagged off Operation Derico which was a Joint Task Force aimed at capturing the hoodlum and his gang members. So many of his gang members were caught but Derico couldn' t be arrested as he continued kidnapping, killing and robbing without fear or pity.
