Bus driver’s daughter emerges as 2018 Lagos One-Day Governor
A 14-year-old daughter of a commercial bus driver in Lagos, Miss Gloria Ajala, on Tuesday, emerged as the 2018 One-Day Governor for Lagos state.
She is a secondary school 3 student of Lafiaji Senior High School, Lagos Island and she would perform the pseudo-role of the governor of the state at a yet- to- be announced date before the end of this year alongside his cabinet members.
Gloria, whose mother is a petty trader, earned the honour as a winner of this year’s edition of Spelling Bee Competition organised by the state ministry of education among the public secondary school students in the state. She defeated 56 others from across the six education districts of the state including Grace Ikhariale from Tin Can Island Senior High School, Tolu Ajeromi who came second and Oluwatosin Akinbodewa from Iworo Ajido Senior Secondary School, Olorunda LCDA) who came third from the pack who made it to the finals held on Tuesday at Alausa Secretariat with the state deputy governor, Dr Idiat Adebule and the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs Adebunmi Adekanye, and many other top government functionaries, in attendance.
A total of 17 One-Day Governors have been produced so far in the history of the competition, which was initiated by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, when her husband was the governor of the state.
By the achievement, Grace, like her predecessors, would enjoy a full scholarship to study in the university of choice and would also attend a short course exchange programme in Finland.
In her remarks at the event, the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, who oversees the state’s education sector, commended the winner and other participants for what she described as impressive and exemplary performance.
She said the spelling bee competition as part of the co-curriculum activities had yielded great results.
He asked the participants not to rest on their oars but should continue to pay adequate attention to their studies and be law abiding.
