Celtic Great Stevie Chalmers Dies Aged 83
Celtic’s legendary striker Stevie Chalmers, who scored the winner in the 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the 1967 European cup final, has died at the age of 83. He is the second member of the Lisbon Lions to die in April after legendary defender Billy McNeill, who also played in that famous final, passed away earlier this month.
Chalmers had a highly successful 12-year spell with Celtic in which he scored 236 goals in 406 appearances. His goal in the European cup final is considered the most famous goal in the club’s history. He also won four Scottish League Championships, Three Scottish Cups, four Scottish League Cups and four Glasgow Cups to go with his famous European trophy
AFP reported that Celtic released a statement in which they mourned the loss of their former star. Chalmers is the second member of the Scottish giants' great "Lisbon Lions"
side to die in the past week after captain Billy McNeill passed away aged 79."It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stevie Chalmers, our loving father and devoted husband to Sadie. The Celtic legend was surrounded by family when he sadly passed away early this morning."
During his career Chalmers won five caps for Scotland and also had short spells at Morton and Partick Thistle during the latter part of his career. But, similarly to McNeil, Chalmers too had been battling dementia. Celtic’s statement praised the striker for his “bravery.” "In recent times Stevie endured the toughest of battles, but just as he approached every game in a green-and-white jersey, he tackled his long-term illness with much bravery and dignity."
"This is a particularly devastating time for the Celtic family, with the passing of Stevie Chalmers coming so soon after his friend and former teammate, Billy McNeill," said Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell in his own statement. "My condolences also go to the Lisbon Lions, already mourning the loss of their captain, and now grieving the death of another one of their own.”
