CBN Marks 10th Anniversary Of Currency Museum
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has marked the 10th Anniversary of its Currency Museum.
At an event to mark the day, which coincided with the International Museum Day which had the theme ‘Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of Tradition’, the Deputy Governor, Operations of CBN, Mr Folashadun Shonubi said the Currency Museum was established on 6th May 2009 as part of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the bank. He said the aim was to create a Currency Museum of international standard which would enlighten and educate visitors on the evolution of money in Nigeria and the other currency related issues such as proper handling of the naira, basic security features and the detection of Counterfeit bank notes.
“One of the major achievements of the Currency Museum, among others, is the commission of the three temporary exhibition titles. Counterfeit Money, which pays noninterest banking in Nigeria and the naira, our National pride,” he said.
Shonubi stated that the Currency Museum carried out school enlightenment campaigns across the different geo-political zones in Nigeria, in a bid to create awareness on our cultural history.
He added that the Currency Museum had acquired a total of 1,925 artefacts since inception. In commemorating the Currency Museum anniversary, the Naira Interactive Room was commissioned. The director, Currency CBN, Priscilla Eleje, said the Interactive Room will give students and visitors an avenue to know more about Nigeria’s currency and artefacts in the museum.
