Istanbul Basaksehir 2-1 Manchester United: Player Ratings as Red Devils Suffer Embarrassing Defeat
Manchester United slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
Demba Ba opened the scoreline after 11 minutes in remarkable fashion, the former Chelsea man racing clean through from the halfway line and slotting past Dean Henderson with United seemingly in the defensive formation of a team desperately chasing an equaliser in the dying seconds, not one level after playing less than a quarter of an hour.
Basaksehir doubled their advantage with an instinctive counter attack on the stroke of half time. Juan Mata had his pocket picked by Deniz Turuc, and Ba's clever dummy allowed the ball to run into the path of Edin Višća, who lashed home.
Within three minutes, the Red Devils had halved the deficit as Luke Shaw's pinpoint cross was headed into the bottom corner of the net by Anthony Martial.
United almost equalised at the death, but Alexandru Epureanu produced a magnificent goal line clearance as Basaksehir secured a famous victory.
Let's get into some player ratings.
Manchester United
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Dean Henderson (GK) - 5/10 - Could do very little about either Basaksehir goals, the United goalkeeper was left completely exposed by his backline.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - 4/10 - The entire United backline struggled, particularly in the first half, with Basaksehir's second coming from down the right flank with Wan-Bissaka pushed high up. Was replaced after 76 minutes.
Axel Tuanzebe (CB) - 2/10 - Gifted Ba all the freedom in the world as the former Chelsea man bullied the United backline. Was replaced at half time.
Harry Maguire (CB) - 3/10 - Picked out Fernandes with a fabulous lofted pass in the early stages of the first half and intervened importantly when Irfan Kahveci ran menacingly at the United backline. Struggled to contend with Ba, especially in the first half.
Luke Shaw (LB) - 4/10 - Flashed a dangerous cross-come-shot across the face of goal inside the first 10 minutes. Singlehandedly created United's goal, working room for the delivery and picking out Martial.
2. Midfielders
Nemanja Matic (CDM) - 4/10 - Left exposed as Ba charged through for Basaksehir's opener. Offered the back four very little protection, and was moved to centre half in the second half.
Juan Mata (CM) - 4/10 - Was shrugged off the ball and conceded possession in the buildup to Basaksehir's second.
Bruno Fernandes (CM) - 5/10 - Sent an ambitious volley wide in the opening exchanges, never quite able to unpick the Basaksehir backline all evening.
Donny van de Beek (CM) - 6/10 - Arguably the pick of the bunch from United's midfield. Sharp and tidy in possession, unfortunate to be taken off after an hour.
3. Forwards
Anthony Martial (ST) - 6/10 - Was on the scoresheet with a deft header on the stroke of half time.
Marcus Rashford (ST) - 5/10 - A quiet, frustrating night for the United forward, rarely seeing a sniff of goal. Was replaced by Greenwood after 76 minutes.
4. Substitutes
Scott McTominay - 5/10
Paul Pogba - 5/10
Edinson Cavani - 5/10
Mason Greenwood - 5/10
Timothy Fosu-Mensah - 5/10
