Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid: Why I substituted Suarez during Champions League defeat - Diego Simeone
Atletico Madrid boss, Diego Simeone, has explained why he substituted ‘angry’ Luis Suarez during his side’s Champions League round of 16 second-leg 2-0 defeat against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
Simeone’s side was eliminated from the Champions League against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge following two goals from Hakim Ziyech and Emerson Palmeri.
Suarez was visibly ‘angry’ after he was substituted before the hour mark during Atletico’s defeat against Chelsea.
The Uruguay forward failed to make an impact as Chelsea comfortably progressed to the quarter-final on a 3-0 aggregate, having won the first leg 1-0.
Explaining his decision to substitute Suarez, Simeone said at his post-match press conference, “it’s normal that he [Luis Suarez] got angry when he was taken off, players want to stay on.
“We wanted a new way to attack them, so we made changes.”
Atletico Madrid’s next game is against Alaves on Sunday in the LaLiga.
