Head of Catholic Church in Uganda dies at 68

Uganda’s head of the Catholic Church Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, aged 68, has died in capital Kampala, a top church official announced on Saturday.

Pius Male Ssentumbwe, the chancellor of the Kampala Archdiocese, said in a statement that His Grace Archbishop Lwanga was found dead in his bedroom on Saturday morning.

The statement did not mention the cause of death.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni led the nation in mourning the Archbishop’s death saying, “With profound grief, I have learnt of the death of Kampala Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga. I join the Catholic Church, all religious faithful, and the country in mourning Archbishop Lwanga. He has died in faith. May God grant his soul eternal repose.”

Lwanga was appointed as Archbishop of Kampala and head of the Catholic Church in the east African country on Aug. 19, 2006.
