Former SARS operatives ordered to pay N50m for killing suspect in custody
Two operatives of the disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) have been ordered to pay N50m for killing one Mustapha Idris Muhammad in 2019 in Kano state.
SP Uba Bangajiya and Inspector Garba Galadima were charged before Kano State High Court 4 sitting at Audu Bako Secretariat for alleged extrajudicial killing.
Presiding Judge Justice Y M Ubale said the accused persons were found guilty of the offence and ordered them to pay the deceased family the sum of N50m.
Counsel to the family of the deceased, Mustapha Hikima said the SARS officials had in 2019 arrested and detained the deceased for 14 days, beat and tortured him to death.
The SARS operatives had arrested Mustapha Idris Muhammad for alleged armed robbery.
Justice Y M Ubale sentenced the operatives to pay the sum of N50M and present a public apology to the families of the deceased.
He, however, ordered them to return the deceased phone which is still in their possession.
