This 102-year-old woman wants to be Nigeria’s next president

A 102-year-old woman has declared her interest to vie for the country’s presidency in 2023.

Nonye Josephine Ezeanyaeche declared her interest recently in a media event at local Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) offices in the federal capital, Abuja.

Known to many as ‘Mama Africa’, Ezeanyaeche hails from Aguata, Anambra state and is the founder of the ‘Voice for Senior Citizens of Nigeria’ group.

She noted in her media event that she is ready to take up the presidency if the country’s younger generation is not willing.

Nigeria does not have an upper age limit for candidates running for the presidency.

A law passed into law in 2018 slashed the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 years to 35 years.

President Muhammadu Buhari is ineligible to run.  He is serving the last of his two allowed terms in office.

Ezeanyaeche joins a long list of presidential candidates, including All Progressive Congress (APC) party chairman, Ahmed Tinubu, Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi and Senate Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu.
