CAF Confederation Cup: TP Mazembe to face Pyramids FC in quarterfinals

Congolese giants TP Mazembe will take on Egypt’s Pyramids FC in the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup in one of four intriguing ties in the competition’s knockout phase.

TP Mazembe, regulars in the African Champions League, find themselves battling for supremacy this season in the continent’s second-tier club competition but will be targeting a third Confederation Cup title. Pyramids FC, on the other hand, will hope to claim a maiden continental title after losing in this competition’s final in 2020.

RS Berkane of Morocco will face Al Masry of Egypt with the Moroccans hoping to go all the way and add to the title they won in 2020 while Al Masry, like Pyramids FC, will hope to become the third Egyptian side, after Al Ahly and Zamalek, to win the competition.

‘There will be a Libyan side in the last four of the tournament as a local derby will be on the cards featuring Al Ittihad and Al Ahly Tripoli.

Al Ahly Tripoli will be confident of progressing to the last four having finished top of a group that included Pyramids FC and record three-time winners CS Sfaxien.

The other quarterfinal will see Tanzanian giants Simba play against South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, who finished as runners-up in 2015.

Simba hopes to become the first club from East Africa to win the Confederation Cup while Pirates will be aiming to banish that final loss to Étoile Sportive du Sahel.

The first legs will take place on April 17 and the return legs will take place on April 24.
