Jose Mourinho Blames One Player For Man United Defeat Against Derby
Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has admitted that he felt Phil Jones would miss his penalty kick, as they lost 8-7 to Derby County in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
United took an early lead through Juan Mata, but the visitors equalized through Harry Wilson and took the lead through Jack Marriott, after Sergio Romero was sent off for the hosts.
Marouane Fellaini made it 2-2 with the last kick of the match.
Phil Jones missed from 12 yards in the shoot-out, as Frank Lampard got one over his former boss.
“We didn’t score when we could and we could in the first half, we had good situations to kill it. At half time I repeated the words I did in the last match. I told them we needed to kill the game and we didn’t.
“I prefer to be proactive and go for it, but we had a reaction I don’t like, we only go for it after the 1-1.
“The penalties come and after the 6th I knew we were going to be in trouble with Bailly and Jones.
“The opponent in the second half started better than us. The Carabao Cup isn’t a worry anymore because we don’t play until next season. It’s the minor competition of the ones we play, but we didn’t throw the game away,” Mourinho told SkySports afterwards.
