Man Impersonates EFCC Operative, Extorts Money From CEO

A man, Paschal Ugwu, has been arrested by the police for posing as an employee of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and defrauding unsuspecting persons.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Edgal Imohimi, who paraded Ugwu along with other suspects on Monday, said the imposter was nabbed on October 5, 2018, in Ijegun, in the Isheri-Osun area of the state.

He said, “He pretended to be an EFCC officer and accused the Chief Executive Officer of Wire-My-Cake Company of defrauding GTB.

“He told the CEO that it was the proceeds of the fraud that he used to set up his company. He had extorted money from the company for two months before he was arrested.

“He was able to obtain N805,000 from the victim. An investigation was launched into the case by operatives of the command attached to Area ‘F’ Ikeja.

“This led to the arrest of one Sodiq Ibrahim, a dismissed worker of Wire-My-Cake Company, who connived with the suspect to defraud his former employer. The suspects will be charged to court at the end of investigation.”

Two other suspects, Sunday Owoicho and Sunday Joseph, were paraded for alleged impersonation and unlawful possession of firearms.

Forty-two-year-old Owoicho was reportedly found with one K2 automatic rifle with 26 rounds of live ammunition, while 43-year-old Joseph was found with one jackknife and a tear gas canister.

The CP said, “During interrogation, it was revealed that Owoicho had been impersonating a law enforcement officer and at various times robbed innocent citizens with the arm in his possession.

“Investigation is ongoing to unearth his gang members and those aiding and abetting him in the crime world.

“Also, Joseph impersonated a traffic police officer in Oshodi and had extorted money from unsuspecting motorists in the area. To make himself credible, he used to adorn himself in green colour combat trousers and a black T-shirt.”

Other suspects were paraded for offences ranging from armed robbery to cultism and arson.
