Suspected Robbers Kill Police Inspector
A gang of armed robbers on Sunday shot a police inspector, Ebri Ogban, to death during an operation along Otop Abasi Street in Calabar, Cross River State.
The policeman, who was attached to the Operations Department in the state command headquarters in Calabar, was said to be on his way home when the incident occurred.
Moments before the policeman was shot, Punch Metro learnt on Monday that the control room in the command headquarters had received a distress call over a robbery operation around Otop Abasi Street and had sent some policemen to the scene.
An eyewitness, Mr Sunday Akpan, said the victim (Ogban) was shot before the policemen sent to the area arrived.
He said, “The police inspector was not with the team that were sent to quell the robbery operation. He died on the spot.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident.
He said, “Our men in the control room got distress calls that armed robbery were operating on Otop Abasi Street in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area and its environ.
“He (Ogban) did not know that armed robbers were operating around the area. He was shot by the robbers twice and he died on the spot.”
