Sri Lanka Attacks: India Has Lost Maximum Citizens; At Least 36 Foreigners Killed


As the death toll in the Sri Lankan blasts continues to rise , the foreign ministry informed today that the number of foreign nationals killed in the attack had risen to thirty-six.

With eleven casualties, India has lost the maximum number of citizens in the attack. The Lanka foreign ministry said one person from Bangladesh, two from China, three from Denmark and one from Portugal, Spain and the US were killed in the blasts.

One person from Japan died in the attack, the ministry said, adding that two Saudi nationals were also among the dead. The United Kingdom has lost six citizens along with two people who held joint US and UK nationalities and two others who held Australian and Sri Lanka nationalities.

Human remains of 13 foreign nationals have been repatriated, it said.

Critically, the foreign ministry said at least 14 foreign nationals are still unaccounted for till date and could be among the unidentified victims.

The ministry said twelve foreign nationals injured the attack have been receiving treatment at a Colombo hospital while others have been discharged after being treated.

The suicide attacks which took place on Easter Sunday shocked the nation with the death toll currently at 359. At least 500 were injured in the attack with several still in critical condition.

The Lankan government which accepted that there were lapses in security said there were nine suicide bombers involved in the attack, one of whom was a female who blew herself up after being caught in her hideout in Dematagoda, a suburb of Sri Lanka. The female was the wife of one of the suicide bomber.

On Tuesday the Islamic State(IS) terrorist organization had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Several nations including India, US, UK and Australia are helping the Lankan government in the probe.
