Ajax Manager Erik ten Hag Reveals He WARNED His Stars About Tottenham Comeback
AJAX manager Erik Ten Hag warned his young side of a Tottenham comeback at half time with the score at 3-0, before Lucas Moura’s hat-trick sealed an incredible collapse for the Dutch side.
Tottenham will now go on to face Liverpool in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1 after last night’s comeback.
Donny van de Beek’s goal in the first leg last week gave Ajax a 1-0 advantage going into the return tie, as Spurs faced a seemingly impossible task.
And after five minutes, the task seemed even harder, as Matthijs de Ligt added a second aggregate goal with a powerful header.
Then, the game seemed to get out of sight completely for Tottenham as - just ten minutes before half-time - Hakim Ziyech made it three with a beautiful shot into the side of the goal.
Going into the final 45, ten Hag admitted that he told his team to be cautious of Tottenham pulling off an upset similar to Liverpool’s on Tuesday night.
“I told the players in the break that it wasn't over yet, you could tell by the attitude of the Tottenham players. They still believed in it,' Ten Hag added.
“When that ball hits the post from Hakim Ziyech (in the second half), it's over and out for Spurs. But I can't blame anyone.
“We have had an incredible Champions League season and have grown a lot as a team. It is difficult to process.”
Ajax beat Real Madrid and Juventus to make it to the semi finals, overcoming the odds in both rounds.
And ten Hag insisted that he can’t feel too hard done by about the defeat to Spurs after their impressive wins beforehand.
“Football can be very beautiful and it can be very cruel, we have had to experience that today,” he continued.
“Overall we had a fantastic Champions League campaign, we were one second away from the final, our team deserves a very big compliment, I am very proud of my players.”
