Undergraduate Shot Dead In Akwa Ibom

A 200-level undergraduate of the Department of Political Science in Akwa Ibom State University, Emem Jimmy, has been shot dead. The deceased was said to have died from gunshot wounds he sustained at the weekend from a notorious gang of phone thieves after unsuccessfully trying to secure his phone from being snatched away.

It was gathered that the victim was shot along Wilson Idiong Street, close to the Obio Akpa Campus of the university in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.

Eye witnesses claimed that the deceased attempted to resist the gunmen from snatching his phone before he was shot and that he died in the hospital where he was rushed to.

Confirming the incident, the Head, Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Protocol of the university, Mr. Akaninyene Ibanga, said the institution took over the medical bill of the victim to ensure he was saved.

According to a statement signed by Ibanga, the management of the university sympathised with the family of the deceased and urged them to be calm as security agencies tried to fish out the perpetrators.

He said the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eno Ibanga, had guaranteed the safety of members of the university community despite the security challenges.

“Late Emem was shot between 8.30 to 9pm at Wilson Idiong Street, off Ikot Okoro Road, in an attempt to resist gunmen from snatching his phone.

“He was rushed to the hospital for which the university management took over the hospital bills just to save his life but on Saturday late Emem could not survive the struggle with death, so he finally passed on at about 12.30pm,” the statement read in part.
