Man Utd And Man City Are More Challenging To Win The League Than Arsenal Despite Having Ozil And Sanchez — Jack Wishere
The former Arsenal midfielder has opened up about his experience of playing with the pair during his time at the Emirates Stadium
Jack Wilshere has explained why Arsenal failed to seriously challenge for the Premier League title during his time at the club, despite having two "world class" talents in Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
Under former manager Arsene Wenger, Arsenal won three FA Cups in the space of four seasons, but missed out on Champions League qualification in 2016/17, after finishing fifth.
Prior to that, the Gunners finished second to Leicester City the year before, but their title challenge has fizzled out long before Claudio Ranieri's side clinched the shock win.
Sanchez joined from Barcelona in 2014, and his arrival - along with the presence of Ozil - was expected to fire Arsenal to contention for major silverware.
But Wilshere, who joined West Ham on a free transfer in 2018, admitted that Manchester City and Manchester United were too strong for the Gunners to compete with.
"We went through a few years where we didn’t challenge but then we brought in Sanchez and Ozil," Wilshere told the Lockdown Tactics podacast
"All of a sudden we started to feel like we could have a chance here but it never really turned out.
"We always had a point in the season where we’d drop so many points and we’d just be going for the top four.
"There were some good players there. Sanchez, world class and a match winner. Ozil, world class.
"I loved playing with him and his ability. But we just never got near it.
"City were too good, they were buying everyone, United had Sir Alex [Ferguson] coming to the end but they were still challenging."
