CASAC welcomes application for former SA President Zuma to be jailed for defiance
The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac) has welcomed an application by the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, calling for former South Africa president Jacob Zuma to be jailed for two years.
As reported by the South African Broadcasting Corporation, the urgent application has been filed in the Constitutional Court following the former president’s defiance of a Constitutional court decision, compelling him to appear before the commission.
Casac executive secretary, Lawson Naidoo, says the commission had no choice but to approach the Constitutional Court for the punitive order.
“We welcome the response, it is a vindication of the rule of law. The fact that nobody is above the law – which is a point brought about by the Constitutional Court when it issued its judgement in the previous application in January 2021. If we are to believe in the rule of law in South African, then the commission was left with no option but to perceive this course of action,” adds Naidoo.
