Uganda jails soldiers for assaulting journalists
Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) said that seven officers attached to military police have been charged for assaulting journalists on Wednesday near the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) where Opposition politician Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, went to deliver a petition about a spate of abductions and disappearances of his supporters.
The officers are said to have been given sentences of between two to three months at a military detention facility.
The Uganda People’s Defense forces have since apologised for the beatings of the at least 10 journalists. UN did also condemn the attack.
And as reported by NTV Uganda, the Journalists are still in pain and several of them will not be able to work for some time. In their narration about the ordeal, the journalists say that they were intentionally targeted. Though the army has apologised and charged the errant soldiers, the journalists are not satisfied and they want more action to be taken
