Newcastle Announce Kieran Trippier Signing From Atletico Madrid
The new signings have begun at Newcastle United with the announcement that they have signed Kieran Trippier from La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
Trippier had been rumoured to be one of the top priorities for manager Eddie Howe as he looks to add to his squad in the January transfer window and steer the relegation threatened club away from danger.
An official statement from Newcastle United confirmed on 7 January that Trippier has signed a two-and-a-half year deal believed to worth in the region of £25 million.
Trippier joined Atletico in July 2019 after the end of the 2018/19 season, which culminated in the heartbreak of a Champions League final defeat with Tottenham Hotspur.
Since becoming an integral part of Diego Simeone’s Atletico that won the La Liga title in the 2020/21 season, Trippier has often been linked with a return to the Premier League with Manchester United and former club Spurs, but he has remained in Spain until now.
Trippier played for now Newcastle boss Eddie Howe at Burnley and links up with him again as he makes his return to English football. He is arriving at a club struggling to stay in the division despite their new found riches. Trippier was tempted by an England return, as he feels it will give him the best chance of being prepared for the World Cup in Qatar 2022, which will take place in the English winter.
Atletico boss Simeone had tried to keep Trippier at the club but was resigned to losing him despite telling him how he felt: “He is an important player for our team and we coaches can’t do too much in terms of players’ decisions, we can only tell Trippier how important he is for the team.”
Trippier will now go into the Newcastle squad whilst Eddie Howe works on adding more new names before the end of the January transfer window.
