Osun lawmaker, Adeyemi Adewumi Irekandu empowers constituents in Obokun, gives scholarships to students

The honourable member representing Obokun Constituency at the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewumi Adeyemi Irekandu has promised that he is committed to delivering sound education and more people oriented projects in the Constituency.

Irekandu made this disclosure during “IREKANDU BACK TO SCHOOL PROJECT” on Wednesday, a first of its kind scholarship programme in the constituency aimed at facilitating good education for the constituency.

Traditional rulers, stakeholders, party leaders, community leaders were present at the event.

During the event, students were picked across all the wards of Obokun State Constituency and examined to benefit from the scholarship programme.

Some students who passed the screening test also received WAEC fees for their registration while other students were given learning aids.

Over 50 students across Obokun State Constituency benefited from the scholarship programme.

Speaking at the event, the lawmaker said “As a child, I witnessed the struggles that come with education. I still remember how some colleagues come to school without learning aids and the pain or discomfort some parents went through before the settlement of tuition fees remains a memory.

“I strongly believe that I owe the people. Before I ventured into politics, I made contributions towards the promotion of education as a private citizen. During my campaigns, I moved around towns and visited some schools in my constituency. I listened to sad and woeful tales from students, teachers and parents over the non-availability of learning aids and non-payment of tuition fees. The tales of students becoming dropouts over the inability of their parents or guardians to pay for their external exams were not only touching but heartwrenching.

“Beyond the oath of allegiance I took as a public officer, I have invested in youths and women development. From organising training and seminars to skills and wealth empowerment to the facilitation of jobs and contracts for constituents, I have increased the bar of youth inclusion, participation and they (youth and women) are the most beneficiaries of my programmes in the constituency.

“I gave out 25 WAEC fees for brilliant indigent students and awarded scholarships to 25 out-of-school children. These students received learning aids such as bags, textbooks, exercise books, pencils, pens, cash for uniforms, shoes and an extra fund was made available to them for their feeding, fees and other essentials.

Irekandu while reaffirming his constituents of a people focused representation, assured the parents of the beneficiary-students that he will continue to make provision for funds to settle their tuition and associated fees every term till they finish their primary education.

He also assured them that he will keep providing learning aids and cash to them.

“A new criteria will be set and there is a possibility for an extension of scholarship including the beneficiaries of WAEC too if they fulfil the new criteria. Education is a future investment. If we anticipate a reward or an enlightened society and a better Nigeria, we must invest now” he added
