HRP 2024: $1m Dedicated to Fighting Terrorism in Nigeria – ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced on Friday that it had approved $1 million to combat terrorism in Nigeria in 2024. This was disclosed by the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, during her presentation at the ECOWAS parliament plenary in Abuja.

Prof. Sow Sarr stated, “In addition to meeting basic needs, the Human Response Plan (HRP) is allocating $4 million specifically for counter-terrorism efforts,” noting that $1,000,000 each was allocated to Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.

“These funds are essential to mitigate the impact of terrorism and armed conflict, which have seriously affected the lives of millions of people,” she added.

She elaborated that the HRP 2024 is designed to address the urgent needs of 5.3 million people affected by conflict and instability in several West African countries, including Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

A total budget of $13 million has been dedicated to providing vital assistance and support to the most vulnerable people in these countries. Prof. Sow Sarr emphasized, “This allocation reflects a commitment to meeting the region’s diverse needs, ensuring that no community is left behind.”
