Bayern Munich 4-3 Real Madrid Stats (6-4 Agg): Stunning Champions League Tie Decided Late On After Camavinga Red Card

Late goals from Luis Díaz and Michael Olise saw Bayern Munich finally put away 10-man Real Madrid in an exhilarating Champions League quarter-final second leg at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

Madrid took the lead three times in the first half, but Bayern responded and eventually won 4-3 on the night, advancing 6-4 on aggregate.

Arda Güler opened the scoring after just 35 seconds, only for Aleksandar Pavlovic to equalise soon after. Güler bent in a free-kick to restore the visitors’ lead, but Harry Kane made it 2-2. Kylian Mbappé put Madrid back ahead before half-time, and for a long time the game looked destined for extra-time.

However, substitute Eduardo Camavinga was sent off for Madrid with five minutes of normal time remaining after being shown two yellow cards, and that gave Bayern the perfect chance to pounce, with Díaz and Olise both scoring to turn things around on the night, and send Vincent Kompany’s men to the semi-finals to play holders Paris Saint-Germain.

Kompany kept the same team from last week’s first leg, while Álvaro Arbeloa made four changes to Madrid’s lineup. In what was Real Madrid’s 515th game in the European Cup/Champions League, it was the first time they had named a starting XI without a Spanish player.

Manuel Neuer recorded nine saves in the first leg last week, but made an error that led to a goal inside the first minute this time. The 40-year-old tried passing the ball out to the right, but hadn’t spotted Güler lurking and the Turkey international shot into an empty net from long range to put Madrid 1-0 up on the night.

Clocked at 35 seconds, Güler scored the fastest goal Bayern have ever conceded in a Champions League match, beating Raphinha’s after 55 seconds for Barcelona in October 2024. It was also the fastest goal scored by Real Madrid in the competition, overtaking Gareth Bale at 57 seconds vs Legia Warsaw in November 2016.

However, the lead didn’t last long. A corner from Joshua Kimmich found Pavlovic stood on the goal line and it was a simple header for the midfielder. After six minutes, this was the earliest any Champions League knockout match had ever seen both sides score.

Neuer was beaten again just before the half-hour mark. Güler whipped a free-kick high to the goalkeeper’s left, and the Bayern stopper struggled to read it and could only palm it into the corner of his own net as Madrid levelled things up on aggregate again.

Güler’s second of the night from range meant he became just the third Real Madrid player to score 2+ goals from outside the box in a Champions League game, after Roberto Carlos vs Bayer Leverkusen in 2000 and Cristiano Ronaldo vs Zürich in 2009.

Arbeloa’s men were showing fight, but up against a Bayern team that have already broken the Bundesliga record for goals scored in a season with five games remaining, it was always going to be difficult to keep them out. Their main man, Kane, struck before the break.

Dayot Upamecano found the striker after Luis Díaz’s run opened up room for his teammate, and Kane made no mistake, finishing low into the bottom right corner of the net. It was Kane’s 50th goal of the season in all competitions, and made him just the second Englishman to score in as many as five consecutive Champions League games after Steven Gerrard (5 in 2007-08).
