[CAF]Kenyan Referee Handed Ban For Life By CAF For Accepting Bribe
Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced in a statement on Sunday that a once celebrated assistant Kenyan referee, Marwa Range who was listed to officiate in the 2018 World Cup in Russia has been banned for life for accepting bribe.
An investigative story by a Ghanian journalist Anas Aremeyaw, uncovered Marwa Range accepting a $6,000 (about 5,100 euros) bribe in a hotel room.
The journalist posed as a Ghanaian football official when he approached Marwa at the 2018 African Nations Championship in Morroco and filmed him accepting bribe at a hotel room. He was consequently removed from the 63 assistant referees’ list for the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
According to the statement, Marwa Range and 22 other referees were affected by the CAF clean-up with Togolese Yanissou Bebou and Gambian Jallow Ebrima banned for 10 years each, Ivory Coast referee Denis Dembele, got a six-year ban, 10 Ghanaians and one Liberian were temporarily banned pending appearances before a CAF disciplinary board on August 5, and seven match officials got suspended between two and five years.
