Manchester United To Offer Ajax Defender £236,000
Manchester United are aiming to lure Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt to Old Trafford with a huge £236,000 per-week contract.
Barcelona appeared in pole position to sign the Dutch team's captain who has attracted plaudits for his towering defensive displays this season, as they reached the Champions League semi-finals.
But Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bolster his defence after a terrible season where they leaked 54 goals, finishing in sixth and facing Europa League football in 2019/20.
Man Utd are now hoping to lure the talented Ajax teenager with a huge wage offer worth £12.3m-a-year, according to Sport, as part of the team's rebuild.
The latest development comes after it emerged the discussions between Barcelona and de Ligt hit a stumbling block.
Barca met with De Ligt and his agent Mino Raiola back in April, and reportedly agreed a financial package that satisfied all parties.
However, Sport has claimed that the Dutchman has backtracked on that initial agreement and is seeking improved terms.
Along with United, it’s reported that Bayern Munich and Juventus have also offered a better salary, but de Ligt’s preference would be to play at the Nou Camp.
Barca are refusing to shift at the moment, sticking to what they agreed last month, and this setback could give United hope in their pursuit of the Holland international.
