Fred Pledges His Future to Man Utd Amid Galatasaray Links
Manchester United midfielder Fred has denied he could leave the club to join Galatasaray in the wake of Donny van de Beek’s £40m arrival from Ajax at the end of last month, insisting he wants to stay and that fierce competition for places is to be expected.
Fred started 23 consecutive Premier League games last season, but was named in the XI just once during ‘Project Restart’ following the return to fitness of Paul Pogba and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s unwillingness to tinker with the team.
The subsequent signing of Van de Beek, albeit a totally different type of player to the Brazilian, led to claims that Fred could be shown the door. Rumours were intensified when Galatasaray were linked and Fred’s Instagram account briefly ‘liked’ a post about the possible transfer to Turkey.
“I want to stay here – that’s my desire,” he told the newest issue of FourFourTwo. “I don’t want to leave. As I’ve always said, I want to be an important player and win trophies for this club.
“[Van de Beek’s arrival] means we’re getting stronger and that’s good for everyone at United.
“We need more players for this season because it will be even more demanding: the calendar is crammed and we need a strong squad to compete for every title. When you play at a big club, there will always be competition – I’m used to it. It’s been like that from day one at United.”
United are still determined to bring in more new faces ahead of the new season, which starts for them a week later than everyone else as a result of prolonged involvement in the Europa League in August. Jadon Sancho remains the primary target and the club are still confident of a deal.
United are also on the lookout for a left back, centre back and striker, although it is unlikely that all three positions, in addition to Sancho, will be filled before October’s deadline.
