Ons Jabeur knocked out of Miami Open in Round of 16

Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur missed out on advancing to her first quarterfinal of the year after a shock loss in three sets to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo in three sets in their Round of 16 match at the Miami Open.

The world number 30 lost 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 in just about two hours to Sorribes Tormo, who is ranked 28 places below her.

The first set swung either way with Jabeur crucially dropping serve three times compared to Sorribes Tormo, who dropped serve twice and converted her first set point in the 10th game to claim the opener 6-4.

Jabeur responded emphatically in the second set breaking Sorribes Tormo’s serve thrice on her way to a commanding 6-0 win to take the game into a deciding set.

However, the tide turned dramatically in the decider as Jabeur dropped serve twice in the second and seventh games eventually losing it 6-1.

This was Jabeur’s third straight loss at this stage in a tournament after defeats at the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships.

Sorribes Tormo, meanwhile, will face former U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu on Wednesday for a place in the semifinals.
