Three South Sudanese generals die after contracting COVID-19

Three South Sudanese military generals died after being infected with COVID-19, the country’s military said.

According to the military, the three were identified as David Manyot Barach, Elijah Alier Ayom and Mabior Maket.

A committee has been formed to organize the burials of the three generals with the military coordinating its activities with the families of the deceased.

Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Santo Domic Chol said an appeal was made by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Johnson Juma Okot to all soldiers to strictly follow the COVID-19 protocols laid out by the government.

Officials from the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) warned that the country is facing a surge in the number of cases due to failure by the public to follow COVID-19 measures, such as social distancing and wearing of masks.

As of March 2, South Sudan has reported 7,926 confirmed cases and 93 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.
