3 More Baptist Students Escape From Bandits’ Captivity

Three students of Bethel Baptist High School, Kaduna, have gained their freedom as they have escaped from the captivity of the bandits.

One of the relatives(aunt) of one the students, gave out her name as Funmi, as she spoke with Daily Trust.

She explained that the three teenagers roamed aimlessly in the forest for 5 days before they met a herder and asked for directions out of the forest.

She said: “The children were found around Kasuwar Magani on Sunday evening hours after 28 students of the school were released by the bandits. It was the school management that called my in-law to inform us ,”

Recall that on July 5, a total of 121 students were kidnapped from their school hostels by armed bandits.
While one of the students, Abraham Aniya, was rescued by security forces on July 12 together with two other victims kidnapped along the Kaduna-Kachia road, two other students fled on July 20 when they were asked to fetch firewood from a nearby forest.

The bandits demanded N500,000 for each of the remaining 120 students, with a deadline of Monday, July 19 to pay the ransom. This happened after one of the captives was released due to illness.

The criminals initially demanded hundreds of millions of naira, but then reduced their demands to N60 million, lowering the price per pupil to N500,000.

It was revealed that one of the parents is working with the Baptist church to raise the ransom. According to the father, if the ransom is paid on Monday, the pupils will “hopefully be released on Tuesday based on their abductors’ promise.”

“We (parents) have gathered some amounts but the church is trying to raise the remaining money to meet up with the demands of the bandits.”
