Internet Critical To Good Governance – Oby Ezekwesili


Nigeria’s former minister of education Oby Ezekwesili says the time has come for citizens to demand good governance from authorities through the use of Internet.

Ezekwesili who was speaking at the Nigeria internet governance forum admitted that poverty must be fought at all levels to address inequality in accessing the digital space.

The political space has witnessed a frenzy of activities as a build-up to the 2019 general elections but this meeting of Nigeria Internet governance forum feels there is so much the citizens can achieve from government even before the election to entrench good governance that will impact positively on the society.

And to set the tone for the meeting, the former minister of education Oby Ezekwesili enumerated the importance of a digitally driven economy, which will provide a lot of opportunities for the people. But the greater challenge in her view is getting everyone involved in this revolution tool.

She cited the example of Kenya and how the people used the power of information technology to alter unpopular policies and she wants Nigerians to take more than a passive approach to demand accountability.

Minister of communication Adebayo Shittu government is aware that the Internet has come to stay as a catalyst for good governance. He assured the people that the ICT master plan will address these concerns and make ICT the driver of the nation’s economy.

As the conversation for good governance continues, this forum agree that the youth population has all it takes to be active participants in nation building.
