Evander Holyfield insists Tyson Fury would have ‘been good’ during his era

Evander Holyfield believes Tyson Fury would have ‘been good’ in his era alongside himself and Mike Tyson.

The veteran heavyweight also believes that there is no one better than the Gypsy King in the division at the moment, ranking him above Anthony Joshua.

Fury reached the pinnacle of the heavyweight division once again earlier this year when he dismantled Deontay Wilder inside seven rounds to claim the WBC title in emphatic fashion.

The Manchester-born fighter is now preparing to fight the Bronze Bomber for a third time later this year to settle their feud once and for all before setting his sights on a unification fight with Joshua next year.

And while Fury is taking the division by storm, Holyfield believes the Gypsy King could have held his own if he fought in a time where Tyson and Lennox Lewis roamed the ring.

When asked if Fury could hold his own during his time, Fury told Pro Boxing Fans: ‘Well it’s obvious he came from a family that fight, so just think about it.

‘In his family life they were fighters, this is what they like doing. In a lot of poor people like myself, fighting was one of the things we did well and so you know with Tyson Fury, he comes from a background of fighters.

‘If he would have been in our era, he would have been one of those guys that would have been good. He is very rangy and he is proven that he can make adjustments.

‘The thing is I have to think that if he was in our era, he would have fought better fighters, so he had to be tough too because everybody in our era was tough.

‘From 1990-2000, you had about six or seven champions. I did it four times in that era, there were a lot of good fighters in that era because we had a lot of good amateur fights.’

Holyfield fought some of the sport’s greatest heavyweights during his time, having had bouts with Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and George Foreman in his fantastic career.

But when asked who he thinks is the best heavyweight currently, Holyfield didn’t hesitate in naming the WBC champion.
