1 dead, 2 wounded in shooting at grocery store on New York’s Long Island

 


A grocery store worker allegedly killed one of the store’s managers and wounded two of his co-workers in a shooting at a Stop & Shop on New York’s Long Island Tuesday morning; police said.

The suspect was later arrested without incident; Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder told reporters.

Ryder said Gabriel DeWitt Wilson, 31, went to the West Hempstead store’s second-floor offices; and shot the two co-workers, identified as a female and a male.

He then fatally shot the manager, Ryder said.

“Within a matter of minutes, it was over,” Ryder said.

Police received tips leading them to a building in nearby Hempstead, where the suspect was taken into custody after he tried to flee; Ryder said. Police don’t yet know a motive for the shooting.

The wounded grocery store co-workers were covering at a hospital, Ryder said.

“We’re going to vote on guns,” Senate leader says

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the Senate would take up legislation “to stop the epidemic of gun violence.”

Schumer, a Democrat from New York, spoke about the shooting during a press conference in Washington.

“We’re going to vote on guns,” Schumer said. “There is no question about it. We’re going to vote on gun safety. The times demand it.”

Schumer said Connecticut Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, both Democrats; were working on a proposal “that can pass the Senate.
