Hostel caretaker flees after killing Delta polytechnic final-year student
A tragic incident unfolded at Delta State Polytechnic in Otefe-Oghara where Ishie Abraham, a final-year Computer Science student, was allegedly shot and killed by the hostel caretaker, who was a former community chairman.
The dispute between Abraham and the caretaker, stemming from a generator issue, escalated despite attempts by the community chairman to mediate.
Subsequently, the caretaker returned, harassing Abraham and tragically shooting him. The students responded with a protest in the community following the incident. The state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Edafe Bright, confirmed these distressing events to journalists on Thursday.
He added that the suspect was at large.
“Suspect is at large, but the command is on his trail,” he said.
Meanwhile, a factional national leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), in a statement signed by its president, Comrade Rioborue Deniran, on Wednesday, called on the authorities to urgently seek justice for the deceased.
NANS offered its condolences to the polytechnic community and the immediate family and friends of the deceased and noted that it was committed to ensuring justice was served.
The statement reads in part: “We received the sad news of the death of Mr. Ishie Abraham, a student of Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara. The circumstances surrounding the death of such a young and vibrant man are completely condemnable, as the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) frowns upon the killing of its members.
“We are calling on the security authorities, particularly the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, and the state government to urgently seek justice for this promising young man whose life was cut short.
“Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the polytechnic community, especially the immediate family and friends of the deceased. The apex student body is committed to ensuring justice in this tragic incident.
“We call for calm and orderliness among our students, while urging the police to make immediate arrests and prosecute the culprit(s).”
“Lastly, we strongly discourage any involvement in criminal activities, as the leadership of NANS will never tolerate any form of injustice against our students. None of us should be a victim of such a tragic fate,” the statement added.
