Man City flop Robinho sentenced to nine years in prison for role in gang rape

Former Manchester City attacker Robinho has been sentenced to nine years in prison following his role in a gang rape that took place in Italy in 2013.

Robinho, 37, rose to stardom in 2008 after making a £38.7m switch from Real Madrid to Man City.

Despite arriving in England in what was a blockbuster deal at the time, Robinho struggled to set the Premier League alight and ultimately went down as a flop before moving on to AC Milan just two-years later.

Shockingly though, it has been Robinho’s off-field behaviour that will define his footballing legacy.

It has been reported on Wednesday by the Daily Star that the disgraced footballer has been sentenced to nine years behind bars following a brutal rape nearly eight years ago.

Robinho was accused of raping a woman in her 20s in an Italian nightclub and was later found guilty.

Despite the Brazilian’s legal team appealing the court’s verdict, the charges were upheld.

The Court of Appeal added that Robinho ‘belittled’ and ‘brutally humiliated’ the female victim.

It has been claimed that the 37-year-old has 45 days to appeal the sentence to the Supreme Court.

Worth noting – In Italian law, no prison sentence comes into effect until all appeal routes have been exhausted.

The footballer’s contract with Santos had been suspended prior to the outcome of the recent appeal hearing.

The club’s president Orlando Rollo also recently confirmed that should the star be found guilty, he would be sacked with immediate effect.
