Algerian president’s health “constantly improving”, government says
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is “constantly improving” as he continues to receive treatment after contracting the coronavirus, the presidency said in a statement.
According to the statement released on Sunday, Tebboune, who was flown to a specialized hospital in Germany nearly two weeks ago, “is in the process of completing his treatment… and his state of health is constantly improving.”
Tebboune was initially admitted to a military hospital in Algiers late last month before he was transferred to Germany. Prior to that, the 74-year-old had “voluntarily” gone into self-isolation for five days amid reports several officials in the presidency and government had contracted the Covid-19 disease.
Tebboune also expressed his “sincere thanks to the people” for their interest in his health, in a separate statement released later on Sunday, according to the presidency.
It added that he also extended his gratitude to leaders and governments of other countries for their messages of support.
Elsewhere, the Algerian government pledged to tighten measures aimed to containing the spread of the coronavirus. Authorities extended a night-time curfew, which now runs from 8pm (local time) to 5am, to an additional nine regions.
The new measures will be implemented from Tuesday for 15 days, authorities said in a statement.
Algeria has so far reported 62,062 confirmed cases and 2,047 deaths, according to the Africa CDC.
