Kano State Govt Refutes Reports That They Are Trying To Ban Women From Driving

The reports of directives to put a ban on women from driving automobiles has been slammed by the Kano State Government.

According to rumours on the internet, the state government has finalized plans to prohibit women from driving in the state.
The State Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, clarified that the administration had never considered the topic before.

He claimed that the account, which he claimed could not be linked to any trustworthy source, was nothing more than the authors’ imaginings.

“The trending story lacks any credibility and that is why it is wholly attributed to a source that cannot be substantiated” he said

Garba emphasized that, if such a plan exists, the state government does not need to be a part of any hidden conference to decide on a key matter affecting the state’s teeming population.

In addition, the commissioner mentioned that Saudi Arabia, which had rules prohibiting women from driving for decades, repealed the restriction in 2018.

“It was interesting that some of the scholars quoted to have backed the alleged ban have already dissociated themselves from the report,” he added

In other news, the Kaduna State Highs Court on Wednesday freed Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat from Kaduna Correctional Centre after they were cleared of all charges.

In his decision, Justice Gabriel Kolawole rejected the State Security Service’s attorney, Tijjani Gazali’s, claim that Mr El-Zakzaky was held in safe custody by the SSS.

He claimed that the decision to detain the Islamic cleric and his wife for their own safety was not made in accordance with the law.

“I have not been shown any incident report or any complaint lodged by residents around the neighbourhood that the applicant has become a nuisance to his neighbourhood,” said the judge.
